Research: Blog post 8: Title Sequence Analysis- Orphan

The overall mood and atmosphere of the title sequence is very dark, mysterious and creepy. This effect is created through the use of sinister and intense music, as well as dark images to make the audience feel on edge and potentially disturbed. The images and graphics shown alternate from one scene being in a dark lighting, to the next scene being shown in a UV light. This may suggest that there are two sides to the character being shown, or two sides to the story.

The mundane and everyday objects and images within the title sequence are made to be seen as dark and scary for example: ripping pages, burning photographs of families, extreme closeups of a girls face, nail polish made to look like blood, a white rose with petals falling off under a UV light etc. The dim lighting throughout the sequence intensifies the scary factor of the imagery.

There are two types of font used in the opening titles. One is an easy to read white font. This is shown on the shots without the UV. This makes it stand out and is earlier for the audience to read. However, it is kept small so the audience can still focus on what is happening in the sequence.

The second type of font is used when the shot is shown in the UV lighting. It is also kept small but instead of white the font is purple, this makes it harder to read on the dark background.
