Research: Blog post 29 sound design

In our task we captured 3 sounds to use in the making of a soundscape for a narrative. These sounds were: Dialling, writing with a pencil, and the typing of a keyboard.

The plot we constructed using these sounds consists of a lab setting in which they are researching the cure for cancer. We used these sounds as they aurally depicted objects and scenarios that would progress the narrative, for example the typing of the keyboard would reflect the research taking place and could possibly build narrative tension due to the rate of the sound. Although this sound effect may connote a sense of movement within the pace, the sound of the dial tones may prepare the audience for the voice of a character, and thereby characterisation, which is often key in  title sequences. The pencil on the other hand provides a harsher sound, possibly demanding the attention of the audience with it's absence.

The genre that this sequence belongs to is Sci-Fi,  due to it's futuristic setting and time frame.

Planning: Blog Post 39 -Storyboard

The storyboard will help us by giving us a clear direction of what to film and which angles to shoot with this. It will also make film quicker as we would know what shots to film and what scenes will come next.

Planning: The pitch task 1-Plot and opening sequence summary

Planning: Mis-en-scene-location and setting

The main location that our title sequence will be filmed in is one of our houses. Most of the shots will be filmed there easily as it is a safe environment that we would be familiar with, an will contain most of the props we will need.

The different settings we will be using are:
- The kitchen
- The living room
- The bathroom

Planning: Technical Skills Audit

We are partially trained in the use of Adobe After Effects and Premier Pro
After Effects allows us to add titles within our footage using a vast array of different effects, fonts, and type faces
We have also gained experienced using Premier Pro to cut, trim, edit sound levels, and add layers and sound effects
On the hardware side, we have learned how to successfully transfer files from SD cards to HDDs

In addition to this, we can now operate Cameras and use them in conjunction with a tripod to create a myriad of shots and angles

Planning: Sound

Exclusive use of non-diegetic sound, primarily music
The soundtrack for the title sequence will include recognisable music, which however will be used ironically or processed slightly (with distortion, flange, or slight pitching shifting) in post-production to create an uneasy or dissonant sound to it
‘Hungary Rhasphody No.2’ by Franz Liszt - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnEv4GpEWUE
This may be used in our title sequence as horror has an orchestral tradition which is prominent in the soundtracks to films like ‘Psycho’ and ‘Asylum’. The piece itself may work well with the title sequence as it begins abruptly and slowly evolves, allowing for synchronization of fast cuts and titles in addition to pacing to aid in creating a narrative within the title sequence. The solo instrumentation of the piece also gives leeway for any additional effects or sounds that maybe added later in production.
Nero Di Marte – ‘L’Eclisse
     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEv0CaMT4M4

On the more contemporary side of the spectrum is this piece, which involves a more atmospheric use of sampling in conjunction with distant and eerie production; this is almost akin to the soundtrack used in the opening of ‘Seven’. The track may work well with our title sequence as it utilises a large soundscape within itself that emulates what can be found in most modern horror, whilst also providing a driving feeling that would assist in directing the narrative

Planning: Distribution Information

Independent Production
Possible distributors include: Lionsgate Film, Hammer Films, and Blumhouse
Hammer Films is most likely to distribute our film due to their UK base of operations and 80 year legacy of horror film production and distribution spanning from 1958’s Iconic ‘Dracula’ to more contemporary titles such as ‘The Woman In Black’
The company also has a large distribution network with connections with Momentum, whom distribute a large amount of successful films in the UK, e.g. ‘Sinister’

International Distribution will be handled by the parent company, Entertainment One, whom are partnered with distribution companies like Lionsgate, Studio Canal, and Colombia Pictures

Planning: Target Audience (Omara)

Based on the research we carried out, our core target audience would fit the description of:

Gender: Male
Age: 16-25
Class: Working class
Location: London

Our wider target audience would fit the description of:

Gender: Any
Age: 15-30
Class: Lower-Middle class
Location: UK

As our target audience is considerably young, we will attract our audience by providing a thrilling and exhilarating experience. As our film is set in London, It will attract and intrigue our core target audience. We will make sure that our audience will be able to relate to the film by using making sure its not too unrealistic.

Planning: Risk Assessment (Omara)

The main risk we would be faced whilst creating our title sequence would be our equipment being lost, damaged, or stolen. To prevent this from happening we will keep the equipment in the protective casing whilst travelling and make sure that none of the equipment will be left unattended as well as making sure to be extra aware and careful whilst handling the equipment.

Research: Blog Post 12: Target Audience Research Homework.

A Target audience is a particular audience that you would aim a product at their age range, such as movies or products that are advertised.

Target Audience Survey on Survey Monkeys. However, for the task our group got over 30 anwers, so here are three that would add up to the conclusion.

Survey 1:

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Interests?: Biking

Source of Income?: Job

What media platform do you use to watch films the most?: Streaming (e.g Netflix)

How often do you watch movies?: Sometimes

What type of character do you prefer do watch?: Villain

What locations do you enjoy?: Haunted House

Which country do films you watch originate from?: HollyWood

Favourite genre?: Horror

Why?: It's excitingand you never know whats going to happen next!

Survey 2:

Age?: 16

Gender: Female

Interest?: Music

Source of income?: Job

What source of platform media do you use to watch films the most?: Youtube

How often do you watch movies? Very Often

Why type of character do you prefer to watch?:Lovers

Which country do films you watch originate From?: HollyWood

Favourite Genre?: Drama

Why?:Entertaining.

Survey 3:

Age:45

Gender: Female

Interests?: History and Archeology

Source of income?: Job

What media platform do you use the most?: TV

How often do you watch movies?: Sometimes

What type of character do you prefer to watch? Supernatural.

What locations do you enjoy?: Haunted House

Which country do the films you watch originate from? British

Favourite Genre?: Historical gothic fiction

Why?: Historical.

Conclustion.

In my opinion, we can see that 16 year old girls would rather watch a romantic film that involves drama rather than action as it would "entertain" them more. On the other hand 17 year old boys are more attracted to watching horror films as they are more intrigued because they dont know what could happen next during the film as they would be drawn to the characters. Also, we can see that mature women at the age of 45 or more would rather watch a type of documentary todo with history as maybe the viewer would prefer learning about the subject such as history than watching a normal hollywood film. Another thing that i have noticed is that, more younger people watch Hollywood films rather than British or Bollywood originated films, this could show us that Hollywood create the most films that are targeted to their target audience and also tells us that they release and make most know/famous films there rather than in the Uk or India. By those results we can tell that most teenagers and adults earn their money by having a job, this could the increase the amount of movies they buy as it is their own money rather than their parents.

Research: Blog post 12: Target Audience

A target audience is a particular group of people a certain film or production is aimed at. Our group created a survey on survey monkey to try and find what our target audience might be and what profiles of people tend to enjoy certain types of film. Our survey currently has 55 answers from which I will draw a conclusion about target audience.

Here are some of the responses we received

A lot of the responses we received were from the age group of 16-25. This age group seemed to enjoy other horror, action, or romance, majority of the people who preferred romance were female. People who exceeded this age group seemed to enjoy either historical films, documentaries, and occasionally romance or action. The most popular location people preferred was the city, and people preferred Hollywood films more compared to films originating from other countries. Considering we are going to be creating the title sequence to a horror film, our target audience would be people from the ages of 16-25 that either source their income from parents or a job. interests may include watching TV, going out, browsing the web, film and art.

Research: Blog Post 8 Title Sequence Analysis : Donnie Darko

The tone created in the sequence starts off quite spiritual and eerie but is also serious and intense. The overall atmosphere created is tense, which is to build up tension for a dramatic narrative timeline. The music starts off quite peaceful as there are birds chirping and it is just instrumental with some humming over the top, then the music changes into a rock/indie song as the camera follows the boy on his bike. The sound effects used add to the tone and atmosphere of the opening, there is the sound of heavy wind and thunder which could connote danger. there is also he sound of a cricket or some sort of insect alongside the sounds of birds chirping, which draws the viewers attention in and also signifies that the location is in the woods.

The opening shot is a panning shot of an early morning sunrise through some trees. This pans to the left revealing a road with a boy lying in the middle of it, this creates confusion and concern within the viewer as you want to know why the boy was there in the first place and is unmoved/unharmed. There are many different shots used, one of which is an over the shoulder shot of the main character looking out to the sunrise and then turns around and quietly giggles. After the title comes onto the screen the camera follows the boy through a neighbourhood, which introduces where the film is set.

Some of the mise-en-scene in the opening includes a bike which at the start is on the side of the road, cars, a trampoline, a book, a leaf-blower.
The text used is in a white colour and the font used looks some-what mythical, this helps introduce the supernatural genre.

Research: Blog Post 23: Individual Creative Ideas

In my opinion i think a horror genre would be easier to work with as it draws a lot of attention from the audiences.  For a horror opening title sequence i think it would be best if you showed information about the main characters past, for example for the title sequence of Texas Chainsaw Mascre it shows the audience the past of the main characters since he was an infant. This would also make the audience gain information about the character and give them a hint of what the movie could be about. Music is important in horror as it sets the mood of the film, and could also make the viewer feel tense and scared.  I think for our teams title sequence it should create tension towards the viewers, and also give them many ideas of the film. The sequence would also include credits such as the Directors name and main actors.

I also think if we did an action/thriller it would make the audience intrigued as the genre is one of the most watched along with horror and romance. In this genre i was thinking that we could have a school shooting, while the camera focuses on the students who have been mudered with a close up of them, also a panning shot of the class room could be usefull so that the audience could see how many students the killer has killed. In the nexts shot it could go into the future and show a mid shot of the muderer talking to the police investigator about the reason why he did this. I think this would be interesing as the audience would be intrigued towards the reasons of the killer and the plot of the film.
